History:
In June 1996, Beechville-Lakeside-Timberlea School
(B-L-T) was chosen by the Department of Education and Culture to pilot a
Comprehensive Guidance and Counselling Program during the 1996-97 school
year. Representing the Halifax Regional School Board, B-L-T was one of
seven sites across the province.
In August, 1996, training was provided by the
Department of Education and Culture for guidance counsellors and
representatives from administration, followed by an in-service day for
staff in October, 1996.
A Comprehensive Guidance and Counselling Advisory
Committee was formed in November, 1996. The Advisory Committee,
coordinated by the guidance counsellor, is comprised of administrators,
teachers, students, parents and community members, as well as the
guidance consultant from the Department of Education and Culture.
The purpose of the committee is to give members an
oportunity for valuable and meaningful input into guidance and
counselling programs and services. Its mandate was to conduct a needs
assessment at the school and determine what resources are available to
meet those needs.

A needs assessment was designed by the members of the
Advisory Committee. School staff completed a needs assessment survey,
students from the Advisory Committee held student focus groups and the
entire student population completed a needs assessment in the classroom.
Parents and community members also participated through a survey
developed by parents and community members on the Advisory Committee.
